Spelling Words: bunch, lunch, inch, pinch, ranch, branch, chip, chop, chick, and check
Homework Packet: Homework packets went home today. Please be sure your child completes all pages neatly and independently. In addition to homework, I have also provided a packet of resources to help your child study for their spelling test. These supplemental pages are not required, but I strongly encourage using them for additional practice. Our Unit 1 spelling test will be on Friday, September 30th.
Writer's Workshop Folder: Your child is coming home with their Writer's Workshop folder. I have asked my students to decorate their folders with pictures of their family, friends, hobbies, favorite sports/movies, etc. You are welcome to decorate these folders with your child as a fun family activity. In years past, children have used magazine clippings, stickers, and photographs from home. To ensure your child's folder is protected, you may want to cover the folder with shipping tape(clear durable tape). All Writer's Workshop folders will be due on Monday, October 3rd. Have fun and be creative! *Please see pictures below for possible decorating options.
Superkids: In our reading, writing, and phonics program, we began Unit 1. Our lesson today focused on identifying initial and final /ch/ blends. To help your child understand how to decode and encode ch words, we used our Super Secret Readers to reveal hidden pictures of initial and final ch words. Our spelling words for the week are considered pattern words. The spelling list has four groups of words that have some of the same letters. Once your child knows how to spell one word in a group of pattern words, it can help them spell other words in the group. In reading groups, we read a Superkids Short called "Cass's Cat." This story was sent home in your child's folder. Please be sure to read this story on a nightly basis to increase your child's fluency. In class we have been reading stories about things the Superkids have done, like having a picnic at the pond and doing different activities to stay fit. Today, your child had the opportunity to write about the things they have done - maybe they have taken care of a pet, had a picnic, or done some of the same activities as the Superkids. In writing narrative pieces, your child can pick a topic about anything interesting, fun, or important they've done.
Math: In math we began chapter 2, which focuses on addition strategies and facts to 12. Using different fact families, we are exploring vertical and horizontal addition. Some of our vocabulary words for the week are addend, sum, and fact families.
Religion: In religion, we began chapter 3, Jesus Grew Up in a Family. We discussed how God chose Mary to be the Mother of his Son. Mary is the mother of Jesus and she did what God wanted her to do. We talked about the importance of believing in God's Word as Mary did.
Theme of the Week: Our theme of the week is learning all about Johnny Appleseed. Johnny Appleseed's birthday is on September 26th. To honor him, we will explore his journey and the history behind his name.
